Description
Dark times hang over the kingdom of Thebes. The blind, aged King Oedipus has abandoned the throne in disgrace and asked his sons, Polyneices and Eteocles, to rule the city together. But power corrupts, and old feuds demand new blood. Soon, Polyneices leads an army from the rival city of Argos against his own brother. The Theban nobles support Eteocles, who is struggling to maintain his authority in the city. The young king calls for the defense of the seven city gates, while seven champions of the attacking forces launch their assault. Meanwhile, the famed citadel of Thebes, the Cadmea, lies in ruins; it has been neglected since the time of Oedipus's father, King Laius. It is as if the Fates themselves have turned against the current rulers of Thebes.
While the common people prepare for war, the nobles whisper that it's time for new leadership—and that the rebuilding of the Cadmea must begin now! But restoring the glory of this sacred birthplace of Dionysus, god of the grape himself, is no easy task, especially with enemies at the gates.
In Thebai, players take on the role of influential leaders of noble families during the turbulent late Bronze Age. Throughout the game, they work to rebuild Cadmea, Thebes' stronghold, restoring the city's exports, offering sacrifices to the city gods, and protecting the people, while heroes deny each other life outside the gates.
Thebai is an interactive, challenging Euro game that approaches dice-placement mechanics in an innovative and tactical way. Players collaboratively create the available actions on the main game board, while carefully managing their personal skills and long-term strategies.
Each turn offers exciting and rewarding choices: use unlocked actions on your player board, or place your dice on the shared board to promote them to powerful council members. This opens up unique scoring opportunities and triggers powerful combos.
Inspired by Greek mythology, Thebai immerses you in the conflict between Polyneices and Eteocles. Defend the seven gates of Thebes, navigating through deep strategy, positive player interaction, and thematic tension—every step of the way.
