From their homeland in the Levant to the distant shores of Carthage, the Phoenicians made their name as master traders, seafarers, and navigators. Their powerful bireme galleys dominated the Mediterranean, their primary purpose being the protection of their vital trade networks. They developed a new script and crafted jewelry, pottery, refined glassware, and highly prized purple textiles. As the leader of the city-state of Tyre, Sidon, Byblos, or Arwad, you must assemble your fleet and establish your influence across the Great Sea.

The goal of The Great Sea is to be the first player to achieve victory through conquest or trade. Players must build and mobilize their ships, strengthen their trade routes, and research new technologies for land and sea. Crucial for success is control of the various ancient temple sites on the map. The game ends immediately as soon as a player's temple marker reaches the same space as their combat or trade marker.
